  • Kerry Cavers

     

    Kerry Cavers  (she/her) is a seasoned Community Builder and the Founder of Moms Against Racism (Canada), a federally registered non-profit with a mission to educate moms in anti-racism and decolonization in order to dismantle racism within ourselves, our families, our communities, our organizations, and our institutions. Kerry is a mixed race, polynational descent, cis-gender woman who identifies as Black. She is a mother to 3 young children under the age of 8; two of whom are white presenting and one who is Black presenting. Born on the traditional territories of the Lekwungen peoples, now known as Victoria, BC,  Kerry grew up with her white mother, in a predominantly white area, disconnected from her Black and Cherokee heritages. She created MAR Canada to bring Moms and those in mothering roles together in a mutual aid movement to fight systemic racism together. MAR defines “mom” or “mothering roles” as adoptive, chosen, foster, surrogate, biological, birthing, non-binary, LGBTQ, godmothers, grandmas, aunties, educators, care providers, and all those who feel that the term "mothering" describes the roles they take on, either in unpaid or paid work. 

  • Karissa Crawley

    Karissa Crawley (she/her) has been a teacher on the lands of the Lekwungen speaking people working for the Greater Victoria School district since 2010.  Karissa has been a teacher at Shoreline Middle School as a learning support teacher for the majority of her career.  Her passion for understanding how different cultures learn and teach started in her early years and university.  After starting at Shoreline that passion focused on learning about Indegenous ways of knowing.

     

    Karissa is white presenting, White/Cherokee mother to two biracial, black presenting children.  After the birth of her children, she started to realize the frequency that BIPOC people experience racism and microaggressions on a daily basis through her children.  When the opportunity to join the Mom’s Against Racism Educational Advocacy Team presented itself she volunteered to be Co-Team Lead.  Karissa hopes that her work with MAR will help more educators and schools create safe spaces for their BIPOC students and advance the conversation about what it means to be anti-racist within the school system.
