Accelerating the Progress of Vulnerable Readers Through Exemplary Pull-Out and Push-In Models of Reading Intervention

 

This research based in-service is designed for Elementary (applicable to Middle School) Learning Support and Classroom teachers. 

 

By attending this session participants will learn how to easily bring the vast majority of students to grade level in reading by:

 

1.   Learning the key elements of an exemplary Classroom and Learning Support (push-in or pull-out) daily reading intervention that will dramatically accelerate the reading of students.

 

2.   Practicing strategies on how to teach in a manner that facilitates powerful strategic activity for all readers.

 

3.   Practicing a useful, efficient and adaptable Word-Work model that fosters a direct connection to reading and writing.

 

Our goal as literacy educators is to provide just-right (personalized) learning opportunities that facilitates reading progress in all our students. This presentation will answer the question “What is possible for students experiencing difficulties in reading and writing?” Over the last eight years approximately 400 students serviced by both presenters who were below grade level in reading reached the average band of instruction. The presenters will also discuss how to use “Zoom” to support students not attending school.

  • Paul Pantaleo

     

    Paul Pantaleo (BEd, MA and Post Master Diploma) is currently a Learning Support Teacher in the Greater Victoria School District. Also as a sessional instructor at the University of Victoria he has taught numerous courses focusing on assisting students at the elementary level experiencing difficulties with reading and writing. He has also been an elementary vice-principal, Reading Recovery Trainer, Teacher Leader and Teacher.

     

     

  • Breanne Glover

     

     

     

    Breanne Glover (BEd, Post Degree Diploma and MA) is currently an Inclusive Learning Support Teacher in the Greater Victoria School District. She has also worked as a middle and elementary school classroom teacher. She has experience as a Literacy Teacher Mentor at the district and school level.
