Using ideas from 2 great books – “The Daily 5” & “Well Played” we’ll explore a new model for math class. In order to truly move into personalizing learning and building the core and curricular competencies while still guiding our students toward strong number sense skills and deep conceptual understanding, we need to move away from the whole class lessons of old. We’ll take the “10 Steps to Teaching and Learning Independence” from the Daily 5 in Literacy and build more choice and individualization into your daily math period. We’ll also free you up to work with small, guided math groups and answers the question: what will the other kids do?

I have taught for over 30 years and developed a strong interest in teaching math in a more connected, student-centered way about 15 years ago. I was the Numeracy coordinator for Sooke district for 8 years and completed my Masters in Curriculum with a focus on Elementary mathematics. I am currently Vice-Principal of Curriculum and Learning for Sooke School District where I continue to live, breathe and celebrate math!
