Do you have questions about furthering your implementation of the Proficiency Scale in your classroom? Let’s explore your questions about sharing student progress, communicating with parents, or switching from letter grades (%) to a growth-minded approach that honours and reflects what students can do, rather than simply what they know.
Come join us while we review the requirements of the Draft Reporting Policy, explore the nuances of evaluating through the Proficiency Scale, and examine how changes in our approach to instruction and assessment can ease the transition and enhance our use of the Proficiency Scale, at all grade levels and subject areas.

Lisa joined the Cowichan Valley School District after a mid-life career shift, primarily as a middle and secondary school teacher. She spent three years as a District Helping Teacher focusing on the rollout of the new curriculum before joining the Ministry of Education in 2017, where her portfolios encompassed Reporting (and the draft K – 9 Reporting Policy), Math, Career-Life Education, and ADST curricula. In 2020 Lisa joined Sooke School District as a Curriculum Coordinator where she could focus on sharing the wonderful learning from her time in the classroom and from the Ministry. She has been fortunate to present locally, regionally and internationally on such topics as Proficiency Scales, Teaching and Assessing Through the Curricular Competencies, and Secondary Literacy.
Prior to teaching, Lisa practiced geological exploration, software development, and human resources in Ontario and in BC. This varied career has been integral to her role as an educator, as it has informed how she approaches education and how it prepares our students for their varied futures.
